Respite Foster Care
It is difficult raising a child with special needs. Every now and then, even the most dedicated parents and caregivers need a break. Our Respite Foster Care program provides respite care in 24- to 48-hour increments, usually on the weekends.
This program is available to individuals of all ages who have been diagnosed with developmental disabilities, physical limitations, emotional or behavioral disorders, or a combination of conditions.
The goal of respite care is to reduce the stress of caring for an individual with special needs, while also reducing the risk of out-of-home placement. Respite Foster Care also provides the individual with an opportunity to build nurturing relationships with people outside the family unit.
Respite care providers are licensed by the State of Minnesota and have undergone a thorough application and screening process, including an in-home safety check, fingerprinting and background check. Multiple trainings are required to provide care through St. David's Center. Each child is matched carefully with a respite provider and takes part in the daily activities of the respite family during their respite stays.
Payment/Funding
This service can be accessed through Hennepin County, Waivered Services or private pay.
